Help Us Continue to “Colour” DVGRR
This year’s Gala theme was an adaptation of Chicago’s classic song “Colour My World.” Did you ever realize that the lyrics only comprise one minute of the entire length of the song? But when we chose “Colour My World” as our theme, we felt that those short, simple lyrics describe what adopters and future adopters experience. Adopters realize over time just how much their dogs mean to them, and from the dogs, we always have the promise of their reciprocal love that we share. It also represents the dreams of future adopters hoping for a dog to love and bring color to their world. (Check out page 11 for a recap of the 2025 Gala.)
At DVGRR, we like to think (and hope) that we are the first step in bringing color—in this case a metaphor for safety, security, love, caring, and hope—to the world of the dogs that arrive at our door, especially those that come from the backyard breeders and mills.
In recent years, one of the much-anticipated staples of the Golden Gala has been the staff-produced videos. Willy Wonka, Scooby-Doo, The Wizard of Oz, and a parody of Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” aptly named “Rescue Funk,” have been included as some the subject matter we’ve covered. However, while people have enjoyed our fun, goofy, and sometimes cringe-worthy video parodies, we kept hearing one thing: “You really need to show what goes on behind the scenes at DVGRR. That would be so interesting.”
This year, our Gala video did just that by providing two intake stories to tie into our Fund-A-Cause. One story told how one of our long-time volunteers came to realize that many years ago her family purchased two Goldendoodles from one of the worst breeders that we have ever worked with. She’s smart and did her homework and thorough research, yet she was duped into believing that these dogs and the parents were well cared for. The other focused on a breeder we worked with for almost ten years until she passed, never realizing just how bad the hoarding conditions were in which she and the dogs lived.
Hopefully the video conveyed that the work that we do is very emotional… because it is. We only provided two examples of the situations our staff sees and deals with on a monthly, weekly, and sometimes daily basis. Most times, we don’t want to talk about it. We compartmentalize and internalize it because we need to—in order to do the job and continue to come back day after day. Some of the situations the dogs come from and the conditions in which they arrive at DVGRR are disgusting, downright revolting, and always heart breaking.
So this year’s Fund-A-Cause is simple—it’s DVGRR. Our Fund-A-Cause always focuses on caring for and improving the lives of the dogs, but it does not always have to take the form of a project to be funded. It can be as simple as funding the organization, keeping us, and sustaining us at the level we are at… as one of the premier Golden Retriever rescues in the country. With your support, you will help us by:
Providing top-quality food and medications, and providing heat and air-conditioning for all the dogs in the program.
Providing our ability to have three top-notch veterinarians willing to provide their services and be on-call for emergencies.
Keeping our campus safe and secure as well as in tip-top shape, not only for the dogs but also for the visual image presented to relinquishing owners, adopters, and visitors.
Having a well-versed staff who gives quality care to the dogs and can provide ongoing support and post-adoptive advice to our adopters.
Having the ability to have two dedicated resident caretakers, and the ability to continue to educate the staff through seminars in evolving techniques in the animal welfare industry.
Giving us the ability to say “yes” to an intake whether it has expensive medical issues (heart murmurs, ectopic ureters, etc.), arrives emaciated and covered in fleas and ticks, or is just simply a shy, shut-down, never socialized breeder dog that has never had the opportunity to color someone’s world.
All of these things factor into the decisions we make to steward your donations responsibly. If you would like to contribute to this year’s Fund-A-Cause and help us continue to put color in the lives of dogs who have only known a world of black and white.
As always, we thank you for your support and belief in our mission. Thank you for “colouring the world” for so many dogs in need.
